Why ASO is the cheapest installs you'll ever get
Roughly two-thirds of app downloads start with a store search, yet most apps treat their listing as an afterthought. Unlike paid campaigns that stop the moment you stop paying, ASO compounds: a listing that ranks for the right keywords delivers installs every day at zero marginal cost.
ASO has two jobs: visibility (showing up in searches) and conversion (turning viewers into installers). Most teams obsess over the first and ignore the second — but doubling your conversion rate has exactly the same effect as doubling your traffic, and it's usually easier.
Keywords: the foundation
Start with what your users actually type, not what you call your product. A 'studio management platform' gets searched as 'yoga booking app'. Mine reviews of competitor apps, autocomplete suggestions, and tools like AppTweak or Sensor Tower for the phrases with real volume and beatable competition.
On iOS, the title (30 characters) and subtitle (30 characters) carry the most ranking weight, plus a hidden 100-character keyword field — never waste it repeating words from your title. On Google Play, the long description is indexed, so weave keywords naturally into genuinely useful copy. Update and re-test quarterly; rankings drift as competitors move.
Screenshots and ratings: the conversion engine
Your first two screenshots decide most install decisions — they're visible before anyone taps 'more'. Lead with your strongest benefit as a short caption over a clean device mockup, not your login screen. Apps that A/B test store creatives routinely find 20–30% conversion lifts within a few iterations.
Ratings are both a ranking factor and a conversion factor. The single best tactic: ask for a review at a moment of success — after a completed booking, a won game, a finished workout — using the native in-app review prompt. And respond to negative reviews; a developer reply that fixes a problem often turns a 2-star review into a 5-star edit.
Measure, iterate, repeat
Track keyword rankings, listing conversion rate, and the install sources in App Store Connect and the Play Console monthly. ASO isn't a launch task — it's a habit. The apps that win organic search treat their listing like a landing page under continuous optimization.
